About Us

The Founding of the Dade County Historical Society

A meeting was called on February 24, 1960, for the purpose of founding a Dade County Historical Society. Esper Ryals was elected temporary chairman and called the meeting to order. There were twelve persons present.

A motion to form a Dade County Historical Society was carried unanimously. A motion to call the February 24th’s meeting, the Founder Meeting of the Dade County Historical Society was also carried unanimously. The twelve people that attended were to be known as the Founder Members. They were: E.J. Ryals, Lacy Stapp, Joseph F. Landreth, Noel G. Hughes, Floyd Gass, Johnson Hughes, Ova Steeley, Alvin R. Jones, Bess Frieze, Ray Schaefer, S. G. Hughes and Madalene Boyd.

The first meeting adjourned to meet March 15, 1960 in the Community Building in the Greenfield City Park . The meeting to be a membership meeting. The first regular meeting of the Dade County Historical Society was April 19, 1960 at the I.O.O.F. Hall in Greenfield . The incorporation papers were completed in November 1960.

The minutes of the August 16, 1990 meeting stated that there were: 12 Founder Members; 144 Adult charter members; 4 High School members; and 7 Regular members. Total of 167 Members.

 Dade County Historical Society Purpose

The purpose of this organization shall be to bring together those people, who are interested in history and especially the History of Dade County. The major function will be to encourage the proper preservation of various historical landmarks, relics, and souvenirs of Dade County and Missouri . To do proper honor to those hardy pioneers of the country, who laid the foundation of our present happiness, by preserving a record of their accomplishments; to create a rightful pride in the rich history of Dade County and the State of Missouri

Dade County Historical Society is a non-profit 501-C organization, all contribution will be fully deductable on income tax returns.

As our only means of support is thru fundraisers that we do during the year, we would gratefully appreciate all contributions you would be willing to make to us.

All monies are used entirely for the upkeep and preservation of our owned properties. All members are unpaid volunteers.

Meetings are held the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M. at the Dade County Historical Society Museum, located at 429 W. Water Street in Greenfield, Mo.
